Sell Outs Already?? July 11, 2007

Hmm… I’m starting to notice a trend. It seems this blog hasn’t been in existence for even 12 hours and we’ve alredy plugged two beverage institutions. How could we sell out so quickly? Either we have meaningless consumer driven lives or we’re damn thirsty. But while we’re at it I’d like to mention that I also went to starbucks today. I didn’t read the inspiring poetry but they’re hiring, so maybe I’ll be a coffee wench/bitch/person/thing.

Words of Wisdom: Brought to you today by STARBUCKS July 11, 2007

Apparently Starbucks publishes quotes on the side of their cups; a bit they call “The Way I See It”. I’m sure they have been doing this for quite sometime, but I usually don’t pay much attention to the crap written on the side of my coffee cup while I guzzle it and generally try to avoid overpaying for my caffeine fix when there is an abundance of it available for free at my office.

Today, my cup informs me:

The Way I See It #265

Wild animals often do a much

better job of caring for their

offspring that we civilized and

educated humans do. If we cannot

keep children safe in their homes,

how can we hope to make

ourselves safe in the world?

–Lee Grogg

Executive director of Ryther Child

Center, an agency providing safe

places and opportunities for children.”

Comment 1: Well duh. Let me explain. Of course animals do a better job at it. Their ability to raise their young has an awful lot to do with the continuation of their species, which generally is all that drives their lives. On the other hand, humans’ lives are generally driven by the idea that they are the superior species and will inevitably be around for a while.

Comment 2: What exactly is your point Mr. Grogg? I understand the first sentence and I understand the second, the part I’m having trouble with is a) what exactly is the comparison between animals and humans as it relates to keeping ourselves safe? and b) I care about this why? Seems to me like this argument needs a bit more that a Starbucks grande latte cup to convey the message. Maybe an alternative media would work better next time.

Comment 3: What the hell? Seriously, why is this on my cup? Seems a bit depressing to put on my daily pick-me-up, don’t you think?

Well, in case you give a shit about what someone deemed intelligent enough to grace the side of your paper coffee cup before you toss it, you can evidently check out more notable morsels at www.starbucks.com/wayiseeit. (Though I’m not sure why one would waste the time. That quote doesn’t even come with a caffeine burst) And as the sleeve (which oddly enough covers the majority of the words affixed to the cup) instructs me, “After you read “The Way I See It,” Tell us how you see it.” It must suck to be the person having to go through all that crap, because I tend to believe that most of the ways people ’see it’ don’t matter much.
